usually sitars have 20 string some but mine has 23. the most ive seen with more strings was like 25

Yeah, but usually only about 3 to 5 string are actually played. The rest are sympathetic strings, that just vibrate with whatever note is played.

Sitar are all handmade therefore the amount of strings vary, however it is usually around 20 or more.
